Dear Lyfairs,
I love this light — I'm sure about it. But I have to tell you something before we go any further: my ceiling is sloped. It isn't flat. Could your designer draw me a plan that will actually work up there, with my ceiling the way it is? I'd like the stones in browns, running from light to dark. It's going to be sixty inches by twenty-eight.
— a homeowner in Beverly Hills, who'd already fallen for it
Dear friend,
You did exactly the right thing. You didn't ask whether we could do it and leave us to find out the hard way — you told us, plainly, that your ceiling was sloped, and asked us to design around the structure you actually have. That one sentence saved your whole project, because it pointed us straight at the part that matters most.
Most of the disappointment in this trade happens here, on ceilings that don't lie flat. A fixture is sold, it arrives, and only then does anyone discover it was never going to hang straight in that particular room. You spared us all of that by saying it up front. So before we promised you anything, we did the careful, unglamorous thing first.
Our designer drew a plan for your ceiling — not a flat one, yours. We worked out where the structure could carry the weight, how the suspension would be pre-set into the slope, how the brackets would take up the angle so that the light fell true even though the ceiling above it did not. We put all of it on paper and sent it back to you, the engineering and the beauty together, so that what you approved was a thing we already knew would work — not a hope.
Then the color. Brown is hard to judge on a screen, and "light to dark brown" can mean a hundred different things between two people. So before we cut a single stone, we sent you a few real samples by DHL and let you choose the exact shades by hand — the lightest for the top, the deepest for where it falls. The browns in your light are the ones you held and chose.
We built it. And then, because a drawing can promise a thing but cannot prove it, we hung the finished piece in our own workshop, on a rig set to your angle, and we filmed it for you — lit, breathing, falling exactly as it would fall in your home. We wanted you to see the real light before it was ever sealed into a crate. You watched it, and you told us yes. Only then did we ship.
I think about that slope often now. It would have been the easiest thing in the world to tell you we couldn't — to let your ceiling be the end of the conversation. Instead it became the most interesting part of it. The rooms that challenge us are the ones we end up proudest of, because getting them right is the whole reason we do this by hand rather than off a shelf.
Your ceiling wasn't a problem, friend. It was just a detail worth designing around — and you were right to hand it to people willing to do that.
With care, Marie, for Lyfairs
Letters to Lyfairs is where we answer real questions from real people, one at a time, in our own voice. If you're carrying a project — a custom size, a difficult ceiling, a room that needs something made for it — write to us at support@lyfairs.com. Some letters become quotes. Some become drawings. This one became a plan no one else would draw.
