Can You Help Me Choose the Lighting for My Whole Home, and Get Every Size Right?

Dear Lyfairs,
I'm choosing the lighting for my whole home, and I love dramatic, glamorous pieces, crystal, interesting glass. But I'm worried about getting the sizes right. How do I know a fixture will be the correct scale for each room, and that it will all work together? Can you help me get this right, room by room?

— a homeowner

Dear friend,

This is the question at the heart of a beautiful home, and we're so glad you asked it. Choosing lighting for a whole home is not about picking pieces you love one by one. It's about getting each one to the right scale for its room, and getting them all to work together, as one considered whole. Here is how we think about it, and how we'll help you get it right.

First, a fixture's size is more than one number.

When someone asks "how big is it," there are really several measurements that matter, and we'll always give you each one, clearly.

Overall hanging height. The distance from the ceiling to the lowest point of the fixture, including the ceiling plate and the suspension. This is what tells you how far it will actually hang down into the room.
Fixture-body height. The height of the decorative piece itself, without the suspension.
Overall width. The widest point, including any projecting glass or crystal.
The canopy. The plate that meets the ceiling. For a very large piece, this may need to be made in more than one section to install properly, and we'll tell you if so.

We give you these separately, rather than one vague "size," so there are no surprises when your piece arrives and hangs.

Second, how large a fixture should be depends on more than the size of the room.

Getting the scale right means looking at the whole picture. A narrow entry, a fixture sitting near a railing or a doorway, the sightline from the next room, the curve of your architecture, the furniture below. A piece that is beautiful in one home can be wrong in another. And when you love a piece and worry it may be too large, we'll tell you honestly. Often the size you first imagine is a maximum, not a must, and a slightly smaller piece creates a more graceful balance.

Third, two words that are often confused, and both matter.

Kelvin is the color of the light, warm (softer, more golden) or white (cooler, clearer). Lumens are the amount of light, how brightly a fixture actually shines. They are not the same. A whiter light alone will not solve a space that simply needs more brightness. So we'll help you choose both the color and the amount, and confirm the fixtures are dimmable, with compatible controls, so you have flexibility.

Fourth, glass and crystal must be seen, not just described.

Clear, white, softly milky, frosted, these words mean different things to different people, and a photograph on a screen can't always be trusted. There are different types of crystal, too, with real differences in how they catch the light. So before you commit, we'll send you close-up images, or physical samples, so you see exactly what you're getting.

And fifth, the most important of all. Every piece must work together, and every piece must be safe.

In a home where several fixtures can be seen at once, from the foyer to the living room to the dining room, their shapes, finishes, and hanging heights all need to relate, so the whole home feels considered, not like a dozen separate decisions. That's the heart of a whole-home plan, and it's what we help you hold.

And on safety, we're careful, always. We provide the exact weight, the mounting requirements, the driver details, and the installation information for every piece. But the final confirmation of your ceiling's structural support, the electrical, the junction-box locations, and anything like an HVAC or beam conflict above the ceiling, should always be verified on site by your own licensed electrician, structural engineer, or contractor. A beautiful fixture is only right when it is also completely safe.

You don't have to figure all of this out alone. This is exactly what we do, room by room, with you. Send us your floor plans, your room dimensions and ceiling heights, photos of each space, and the pieces you love, and we'll come back with a considered plan, the right sizes, and honest guidance, every step of the way.

Yours,
Marie

P.S. — Worried about getting the sizes right across a whole home? A fixture's size is more than one number, we give you the overall hanging height, the fixture-body height, the width, and the canopy, each separately, so nothing surprises you. The right scale depends on the room, the sightlines, and the architecture, not just the square footage, and when a piece may be too large, we'll say so. We'll help you choose both the color of the light (Kelvin) and the amount (lumens), send real samples of glass and crystal before you commit, and make sure every fixture works together as one whole. And for safety, we give exact weights and details, while your own licensed trades confirm the structure and electrical on site. This is Letters to Lyfairs.
