I love this Ceramics Ginkgo Leaves Chandelier. How high does my ceiling need to be for it?
Dear Friend,
This is one of the smartest things to check before you fall in love with a piece, so I'm glad you asked. The happy news first: because we make our pieces to order, you don't have to force your ceiling to fit the light. We fit the light to your ceiling.
But let me show you how it really works, so you can picture it in your own home.
The first rule is simple, and it's about how the light hangs, not just the ceiling number:
Over open floor, where people walk, the bottom of the chandelier should sit at least about 7 feet above the floor, so there's clear, comfortable headroom beneath it. Over a table, it can hang lower, usually about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop, since no one walks under it. Everything else follows from that one rule.
So to know the ceiling you need, there's a simple sum: the height of the chandelier, plus about 7 feet of clearance beneath it.
Let me make that real with one of our pieces. Take our porcelain-leaf twig chandelier, a cascading, branch-like design made for tall spaces. It comes in four sizes, and you can see exactly how the ceiling requirement grows with each:
| Chandelier size | Height | Minimum ceiling | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| D39.4″ (16 lights) | 70.9″ (1.8 m) | about 13 ft | a tall living room or foyer |
| D47.2″ (24 lights) | 98.4″ (2.5 m) | about 15 ft | a double-height foyer or stairwell |
| D47.2″ (32 lights) | 118.1″ (3 m) | about 17 ft | a grand hall or lofty entry |
| D59.1″ (128 lights) | 157.5″ (4 m) | about 20 ft | a hotel lobby or soaring atrium |
You can see why a piece like this is made for high ceilings. Even its smallest size wants a room of about 13 feet, and its grandest, at 4 meters tall, belongs in a 20-foot space, the kind of soaring entry or lobby where it can truly take your breath away.
And if you'd like a simple way to picture the right width for a grand entry:
Add the length and width of the room in feet, and that number, in inches, is a good guide to the chandelier's diameter. A foyer 20 feet by 16 feet, for instance, suits a piece around 36 inches across. It's only a starting point, but it helps you imagine the scale.
Here's the part I love most. If your ceiling sits between two sizes, or you want the proportions adjusted just so, we can tailor the height and the drop to your exact ceiling, so it never feels cramped, and never lost in the space. Tell us your ceiling height, and whether it hangs over open floor, a staircase, or a table, and we'll set the size and the drop so it hangs perfectly.
One last thing, gently, because these pieces are substantial. A large chandelier is heavy, so the ceiling must be able to hold it safely. The load needs to reach the true structure above, and for a large fixture we always recommend having a structural engineer confirm it before installation. Once we've finalized your piece, we'll give you its exact weight to work from.
Tell me about your ceiling whenever you're ready, and I'll help you find the right proportions.
Yours,
Marie
