"Is Your Chandelier Damp-Rated? Can I Put It in My Spa Bathroom?"

Dear Lyfairs,

I'm looking for a chandelier for my bathroom. It's about 160 square feet, with a 10-foot ceiling. Are your chandeliers damp-rated? Can they be installed in a bathroom?

— a homeowner from USA

Dear Friend,

What a lovely space to light. A bathroom that size, with a 10-foot ceiling, has beautiful, generous proportions for a chandelier. Let me answer you clearly and honestly, because part of this is about safety.

Yes, we can make a piece suited to a damp location, which is exactly what a bathroom is. But I want to draw one careful line for you, between damp and wet, because it matters for where the light can safely hang.

In your bathroom
✓ Yes: a spot that lives with steam and humidity, but doesn't get splashed or rained on directly. In a bathroom your size, that's most of the room, over the center, over a vanity, or over a freestanding tub where it isn't directly under running water.

✗ Not: directly above the shower, or right over a tub where water sprays onto it. Those spots need a true wet-rated fixture, and our pieces are made for damp locations, not wet ones.

So the honest answer for your bathroom is yes, as long as it hangs where the steam reaches it, but the water itself does not. In a room of about 160 square feet, you have lovely freedom to place it as a centerpiece.

When we make a piece for a damp space like yours, here's what we do differently, so it lasts for years in the humidity:

We keep the exposed metal to a minimum, and make those parts from stainless steel, which resists rust. And we use ceramic lamp holders, which hold up far better against moisture. These quiet choices are what let a chandelier live happily in a steamy room, instead of tarnishing over time.

One simple thing that helps us take care of you: when you place your order, just add a note that it's for a bathroom. That way we build it for humidity from the start, with the stainless steel and ceramic details, rather than as a standard indoor piece.

And since you told me your space, here's a little guidance on size and height:

With a 10-foot ceiling, you have comfortable room to let a chandelier hang as a real centerpiece. If it hangs over open floor, the bottom should sit about 7 feet above the floor, so there's clear headroom beneath it. If it hangs over a freestanding tub, it can drop a little lower, since no one walks directly beneath it, and it looks beautiful reflected in the water. For the size, a room around 160 square feet can carry a generous, sculptural piece without it feeling crowded. Tell me where in the room you're picturing it, and whether it's over the tub, the vanity, or open floor, and I'll help you choose the right scale.

Send me a little more about your bathroom whenever you're ready, and we'll design something both beautiful and safe for the space.

Yours,
Marie

P.S. — Dreaming of a chandelier in a large bathroom? Two things to know. First, damp is not the same as wet: a damp-suited piece is lovely over a vanity, open floor, or a freestanding tub, as long as it isn't directly under running water in the shower. Second, tell us at the time of your order that it's for a bathroom, and we'll build it with minimal exposed metal, stainless steel parts, and ceramic lamp holders, made to live in humidity. With a 10-foot ceiling, hang the bottom about 7 feet above open floor. This is Letters to Lyfairs.
