It Is Simply Itself

There's a saying I've turned over in my mind for a long time.

Because you don't have to know you are you, you truly are yourself.

Slowly, I think I've come to understand it.

If a thing has to keep reminding itself, I am me, if it has to work at proving who it is, that, in a way, shows it isn't quite itself yet.

What is truly itself doesn't need to think about it. It simply lives that way, naturally. Like water. Water doesn't have to tell itself, I want to be like water. It is water, by its very nature.

I think people are probably the same.

In the past, I might still have worked at it, at being myself. But slowly, I found that even this thought, of trying to be myself, could be set down. No effort, no proving. I am, naturally, me.

This is also why I love this piece by Gordon Gu, the Time Travel sculpture.

It's made of glacier crystal. What it keeps is that natural form found in nature. It hasn't been over-carved into something else.

It is simply itself. It doesn't need to be carved. That natural shape, just as it is, is the most beautiful.

Looking at it, I think that a person, in the end, is probably the same. No longer carving yourself into the shape others expect. Just quietly being the self you already are.

It is simply itself. And I am simply me.
