Growth Rings

Growth Rings

I often think that a life is shaped by two kinds of relationships. One is the relationship between people. The other is the relationship between a person and objects. It's these two, little by little, that make you who you are.

And the state of our life, in this moment, decides what kind of people, and what kind of things, we draw toward us.

What Lyfairs chooses is, really, my relationship with objects.

It is the state of my life, at each point along the way. And it is my taste, at each point along the way. Whatever kind of person I am in this moment, that is the kind of thing I'm drawn to, and the kind of thing I choose.

So when the things we've chosen are seen by you, across this vast universe, it is a wonderful kind of fate.

In that moment, we are no longer alone. Somewhere in the world, there is a person who, right now, shares the same taste, the same state of life. And just like that, we resonate.

Today, I'd like to share with you a piece by Gordon Gu. A coffee table.

Gordon Gu brought together reclaimed wood, natural branches and leaves, and clear resin.

This table is called Growth Rings. I think the name suits it perfectly.

Because its surface is like the grain a tree leaves behind after it's been cut open. Ring after ring. As if time itself had been kept.

Those rings, one after another, stand for time, for experience, for the traces a life leaves as it goes. A quiet kind of growth. A beauty slowly left behind by the years.

I love this piece. Perhaps it's because, right now, I'm walking a path like this one too. Growing slowly, in no hurry, keeping every stretch of time I've passed through, close to me.

If you see it, and it moves you too, then perhaps, right now, we are people who share the same state of life.
