Kindred Spirit

There's a feeling that's really quite strange.

The first time you meet someone, though you've only just met, something in you feels as if you've known them a long time, like an old friend.

I've met people like this. The first time we meet, a few words in, there's that feeling of having known each other before. As if we were, all along, the same kind of person.

There's a phrase for it, a kindred spirit. Someone whose tastes and nature are so close to yours that it feels you were meant to be the same kind of soul. A sense of fate you can't quite explain.

Later I found that this feeling doesn't only happen between people.

When I came upon Gordon Gu's work, I felt it too.

We've hardly exchanged more than a few words. And yet, looking at each of these pieces, I feel as though they are the very things I'd always wanted to say, but never quite had. And he had made them real.

In that moment, I felt that same sense of recognition. As if, across a great distance, we were the same kind of soul.

I've always felt that our relationship with objects reveals who we are.

What moves you, what you choose, says something about the kind of person you are.

So when I came upon this table by Gordon Gu, the Vortex round table, it was love at first sight.

It's made from glacier crystal, its surface carved with the patterns of flowing water. Light falls on it like ripples across a lake, ring after ring. It brings to mind water, always moving, always renewing itself.

What this table speaks of is nature's eternal, cyclical beauty.

And I think we people are like this too. Those who share our frequency, even if, for all sorts of reasons, we part for a while, somehow, after all the turning and wandering, seem to find their way back together. Like water, flowing away, and then cycling back. Like what this table means to say.

Perhaps that's why some meetings feel, from the very first, like coming home.
