Lucky to Have Met Them at This Point in My Life

The notes I write here are really the experiences I've had along the way as I've grown, and the quiet growth of my own heart.

What surprised me was that, slowly, I came to see that behind Gordon Gu's work lies a deep, and powerful, philosophy of life.

I often have a strange feeling. I write down something I've come to understand, then look again at one of their pieces, and find that the piece had already said the very thing I wanted to say, in another way, long before.

These artists don't preach. They simply settle their hearts and spend a great deal of time, little by little, carving their work. And through that work, they quietly express a very high state of living.

Looking at these pieces, a kind of awe rises in me. Awe for the art itself, and for the great artists behind it.

And so I often feel how truly lucky I am. Lucky not only to work with their pieces, but, more than that, to have met them at this point in my life.

It's like meeting a person. At the right time, I met a group of people walking at the same height as me. What they've spent a lifetime carving, and what I've slowly come to understand along my own way, met here.

I've slowly come to understand that real understanding only comes when two people communicate at the same time, and on the same level. Otherwise, however many words there are, we're each just talking on our own.

I think this is how it is between me and these artists. Across time, across one piece after another, we've hardly exchanged a word, and yet it feels as though we've been communicating all along, on the same level. They put what they wanted to say into their work; I put what I've understood into my notes. And they say the same thing.

This is why reading my notes, and seeing their work, are really one and the same thing. They speak of the same understanding of life.

I'm grateful for this meeting. That at this point in my life, I can communicate with you, at the same time, and on the same level. And suddenly, I feel I'm no longer alone.

You're welcome to step into their world, and see the pieces for yourself:
