Slowly I have come to feel that words are not so important after all.
What truly matters is the feeling a person gives you.
There are people who, when you watch them work, are doing it with love. That love, they themselves may say nothing of it, and yet you can truly feel it. It is there in their eyes, in their movements, in the care they bring to the smallest thing. And slowly I have come to feel that love is something that cannot be hidden. Whether or not there is love in a person's heart, the other can feel it.
And it is just because of this that I have found love can truly draw people near.
A person who carries love, a thing made with love, has something about it that makes you want to come closer. Not from any pretty words, nor from a lovely face. It is simply that the love itself is felt, and then you want to be near it.
Thinking of this, I felt a sudden, deep gratitude.
I feel that for this world to give us the chance to love is, in truth, our privilege. And that we still have the capacity to love is a very lucky thing.
Because to be able to love means our heart is still alive, still warm. It has not been hardened by life, nor sealed shut by our troubles. A person who can still love the flowers, the trees, the people beside them, and all the things of this world, their heart is in fact rich.
I used to think that love was a giving, that in giving it out, I was left with a little less. But now I understand that to be able to love is a blessing. That heart still able to love is itself the most precious thing.
And these past days, I have slowly come to understand something else.
It turns out there can be love in our work, too.
I used to think that work was just work, a way to make a living, a way to get things done. But slowly I have found that each thing I choose, each person I treat, each small thing I do, if done with love, that thing becomes different. It is no longer only a job. It becomes a way of passing on the beauty and the care in my heart.
This, I think, is a kind of very quiet happiness. To be able, with love, to live, to treat the people beside me, and to do the work in my hands.
To be able to love. How good that is.
