Every Leaf

In nature, every leaf has its own veining. Look closely, and no two are ever exactly the same.

I think we people are like this too. Each of us has our own unique character.

Honestly, in real life, a lot of people don't seem to have many thoughts of their own. They drift with the current, doing whatever others do.

So to meet someone with an independent character is a lucky thing. They have their own judgment, their own true likes, and they aren't easily pushed along by whatever is trending.

I've been lucky, over the years, to meet quite a few people like this. My partners, and a partner who once walked a stretch of the road with me, and the artists who made the work I love. Every one of them has their own independent character, their own convictions.

It was they who, little by little, shaped the way Lyfairs chooses things. Being around them, influenced by them, I slowly grew my own eye.

But I've also slowly come to understand that everyone has an independent side, and a side that drifts with the current. Even the person who seems to drift the most surely holds, somewhere in their heart, something of their own that they quietly treasure.

Like leaves. Every leaf is different, each with its own veining. And yet the great tree embraces every leaf, and nourishes every leaf. This is nature's tolerance, and its love.

This is also why I chose this collection from Gordon Gu, the Ever-thriving ceiling lamp.

Its inspiration is the leaf. It takes the organic shapes, the contours, and the delicate vein patterns found in nature, and magnifies them into a work of art. Light passes through it, refracting and reflecting, and the light and shadow come alive, like sunlight falling through the leaves of a tree.

I love it because it takes that small, one-of-a-kind leaf, and enlarges it, so we can see the beauty that was always there. Just as I hope every unique person, every unique leaf, can be seen, embraced, and loved.
