I Want to Be Someone Who Lights Up Others

I've always felt that everyone needs pure love, and pure friendship.

Not the kind of closeness that comes only because you're useful, because you have something to give. But the pure kind, where someone likes you, and is good to you, simply because you are you.

Along the way, I've met my share of worldly, self-interested people, ones who came close hoping to use me. In those moments, I felt sad too.

But I've realized how lucky I am. Because beyond those people, I've also met so many lovely, sincere friends. They like me for who I am, not for what I can give them.

They are like the sunlight in my life. On my busy days, the days when I grow tired, or sad, it's they who make me feel warm, and loved.

Having been lit up like this, I understand just how precious that light is.

And so I want to be someone like that too, someone who lights up others. To take the warmth and love I've received, and pass it on, to the people around me, to the people I care about.

I also want to guard these pure, kind, good-hearted people. In this world, people like this are rare, and precious. I want to use my own light to watch over them, so that their purity isn't dirtied, or dimmed, by all the worldly things.

I think the best version of a person is probably this. To have been loved, to have been lit up, and then to become a light yourself, and light up others.

This is also why I love this piece by Gordon Gu, the Angel Chair.

It's made of glacier crystal. Its back is a pair of angel's wings. An angel stands for guardianship, for purity, for hope.

Sitting in it, it's as though a pair of gentle wings is truly there behind you, watching over you. It isn't just a beautiful chair. It seems to tell you, softly, that you are being protected, that you can rest easy, and go after what you long for, with hope in your heart.
